How the SEALS Hiring Portal Works

Law schools may post open academic positions through the SEALS Hiring Portal. A designated school representative creates a password, which allows authorized users at that institution to generate a unique job advertisement link.

Before posting to SEALS, schools must first create their official job advertisement and obtain the public job ad link from their institution. That link is then entered into the SEALS Hiring Portal to generate the SEALS listing.

Schools are responsible for the content and maintenance of their job postings. Positions automatically expire after six months unless renewed or updated by the hiring institution.

The SEALS Hiring Portal supports postings for:

  • Doctrinal faculty
  • Clinical faculty
  • Legal writing faculty
  • Academic and bar support faculty
  • Deans and academic leadership positions
  • Librarians

> Directions for Using the SEALS Hiring Portal

Faculty candidates may create a searchable profile through the SEALS Hiring Portal.

Profiles allow candidates to:

  • Indicate interest in visiting, permanent, or single-course opportunities
  • Share academic background and professional experience
  • Identify subject-matter expertise
  • Make their profile visible to law schools and hiring chairs

Profiles go live immediately upon creation and may be toggled public or private at any time.

The SEALS Hiring Portal supports:

  • Entry-level candidates
  • Visiting assistant professors (VAPs)
  • Lateral faculty candidates
  • Dean and administrative candidates
  • Librarian candidates
  • Legal professionals transitioning into academia

Candidates are encouraged to keep profiles updated to reflect current availability and interests.

Search committees can use the SEALS Hiring Portal to identify candidates based on their teaching and scholarly interests, helping schools locate individuals whose expertise matches their hiring needs. Candidates may also indicate whether they plan to attend the SEALS Annual Conference, creating additional opportunities for search committee members and candidates to connect in person. The SEALS Hiring Portal is designed to streamline the hiring process while encouraging meaningful engagement within the SEALS community.

The SEALS Hiring Portal supports entry-level law faculty hiring by allowing new candidates to create searchable profiles and explore open positions.

Entry-level candidates may indicate interest in tenure-track or visiting roles and connect with institutions seeking emerging scholars and teachers.

SEALS programming, including mentoring and conference-based initiatives, further supports individuals entering the legal academy.

The SEALS Hiring Portal facilitates visiting and lateral faculty hiring across law schools.

Candidates may indicate availability for:

  • Visiting assistant professor positions
  • Temporary teaching appointments
  • Permanent lateral moves
  • Single-course offerings

Law schools may use the SEALS Hiring Portal to identify experienced faculty seeking mobility within the legal academy.

While faculty hiring often aligns with academic hiring cycles, the SEALS Hiring Portal supports year-round recruitment.

Institutions may post open positions at any time, and candidates may update availability throughout the year.

This structure allows flexibility beyond traditional hiring timelines and complements conference-based hiring activity.

SEALS seeks to support aspiring law professors and new law professors in establishing early career success. In addition to the SEALS Hiring Portal, SEALS offers several tracks of programming at its annual meeting, including:

Aspiring Law Professors Workshop: This workshop, open to all SEALS annual meeting attendees, includes candid conversations about hiring norms and barriers to teaching law. It also encourages those from all backgrounds to enhance their application materials and overcome barriers. Its programming covers everything from crafting an ideal research agenda to navigating self-promotion.

Prospective Law Professors Workshop: This workshop is by application only and provides aspiring law professors with targeted feedback and advice from seasoned law professors as the aspiring law professors prepare to seek permanent faculty positions. The workshop provides opportunities to participate in mock interviews and mock job talks and to receive 1-on-1 feedback on CVs. The workshop committee accepts applications in the early spring.

Beginning and Newer Law Teachers Workshop: This workshop, open to all SEALS annual meeting attendees, offers programming aimed at assisting junior faculty members. The programming revolves around the three primary elements of a professor’s job—teaching, scholarship and service—with the emphasis on teaching and scholarship.  The programming takes a serious look at the ways professors can develop as teachers, both in and out of the classroom, focusing not only on pedagogies, but on specific areas of interest, such as teaching through alternative methods, using technology, designing exams and other assessments, teaching professional identity formation, and connecting the classroom to law practice. Programming about scholarship includes a wide range of topics, from developing the processes to create scholarship, to how to find one’s scholarly voice.

New Scholars Workshop: This workshop provides professors nominated by their dean opportunities to interact with their peers and experts in their respective fields and to present their work in a supportive and welcoming environment. Each workshop participant is matched with a mentor in their field.
SEALS understands that many candidates wish to conduct their job searches discreetly. Although there is no way to guarantee complete confidentiality of any job search, the SEALS Hiring Portal is designed to extend some meaningful protections. Schools can only access the portal to view candidates through an institutional account, and the SEALS Hiring Portal blocks the institutional account from seeing profiles of candidates from the same institution.
