St. Thomas University Benjamin L. Crump College of Law is seeking several attorneys to join its legal writing faculty beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. Professors in St. Thomas’ Legal Writing Program teach two sections of the required Legal Research & Writing (analysis and objective writing) and Advanced Legal Research & Writing (persuasive writing) in the 1L year (approximately 20 students per section). In addition to teaching the weekly classes, professors evaluate students’ writing assignments, provide detailed written feedback, and meet with students during office hours. Although the syllabus and main assignments are uniform among sections, Legal Writing Professors have the freedom to develop their own additional assignments to teach the required skills. Teaching Appellate Advocacy (the third required course of the legal writing program) during the summer semester as an overload is encouraged, but optional.

St. Thomas Legal Writing Professors are not required to engage in scholarship, but they do serve on law school committees and in leadership positions, and have partial voting rights. Professors are offered a one-year contract, subject to renewal. Upon successful completion of two one-year terms, Legal Writing Professors may apply for a longer-term contract.

The University of Richmond School of Law is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty member to teach one section of the first-year J.D. Legal Analysis and Writing (LAW) course, along with one upper-level analysis and writing course. The position begins in August 2024. 

Our first-year writing program is a two-semester, five-credit program that focuses on legal analysis and core principles of communication and expository writing, such as audience and purpose, organization, and presentation. It is a director-less program in which the LAW faculty coordinate learning objectives. Faculty are expected to teach and assess the same fundamental skills of legal analysis and writing using a shared process-based approach, and to provide multiple opportunities for students to practice and receive feedback. Faculty have autonomy with respect to all pedagogical choices for achieving these objectives, including, for example, classroom exercises and problem design, selection, and implementation. Separate from the LAW course, first-year students take a one-credit research course taught in the fall by library faculty. The appointed hire will also teach an upper-level course for students who would benefit from an additional semester of instruction in legal analysis and writing fundamentals.

Depending on experience, a successful candidate will be hired as Assistant or Associate Professor of Law, Legal Practice and will be eligible for promotion and five-year presumptively renewable contract upon promotion to Professor of Law, Legal Practice. The position requires a J.D. degree and at least three years of relevant teaching experience in first-year legal analysis and writing.
