SEALS Panel Submissions :: Policies

Please read and confirm you understand our submission policies.

Note: Please bear in mind that the one panel rule explained below does NOT apply to discussion groups. So, someone can participate on a panel AND participate in one or more discussion groups.

Panel Composition Policies

  • No panel should include more than one speaker from a single school, including the moderator.
  • Institutional members should comprise at least half of the speakers, including the moderator.
  • Panel organizers should consider diversity (gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, diversity of viewpoint, school affiliation) in organizing panels.
  • In encouraging diversity of viewpoint, SEALS means that, if the topic of a panel encompasses issues on which there exist strongly opposing public or academic viewpoints, then the panel's make-up should reflect the appropriate ideological diversity.

Panel Participation Policy ("One-Panel Policy")

It is SEALS policy that each participant in the Annual Meeting may serve (either as presenter or moderator) on only one panel.

This policy does not apply in the following circumstances:

  1. A person may serve both on a panel and as a mentor to a new scholar.
  2. Participants in the Call for Papers panel may serve on that panel and on a non-new-scholars panel.
  3. A person may serve on a second panel as a replacement for a withdrawn panelist, but only
    1. if, as of June 15, the panel's organizer has made good faith, but unsuccessful, efforts to find a replacement not already on a panel, or
    2. if the panelist to be replaced withdrew on or after June 15; and
    3. in either case, only with the permission of the Executive Director.
  4. In extraordinary circumstances, the Executive Director may, in his or her discretion, grant permission to a person to serve on more than one panel.

Note: Please bear in mind that the one panel rule does NOT apply to discussion groups. So, someone can participate on a panel AND participate in one or more discussion groups.

You should have your panel title, description and the names, institutions and email addresses of all participants at hand before you begin the submission process. Please be aware that you must have at least four speakers to submit a panel, and at least 10 discussants to submit a discussion group. You must complete the submission once you begin the process.
